In 2005 Americans spent $85.9 billion looking for relief from back and neck pain through surgery, doctor's visits, X-rays, MRI scans and medications, up from $52.1 billion in 1997.

The price tag for spinal surgeries is rising. Each year about 300,000 Americans have surgery for herniated disks—with hospital, with anesthesia and surgery costs running around $10,000 per operation. Spinal fusion surgery bills run even higher, at about $60,000 per procedure for hospitalization costs.
